A Sister and Neighbor

Today we visited my sister at her library and we’re planning to earn a fun patch, but instead Juliette got to enjoy storytime (my sister is really good with the kids!), deliver Girl Scout cookies to several of my sister’s coworkers, play in the children’s room, and go out to lunch with her. Cub had fun too, but Juliette is the one who was super-upset that we had to leave.

One Last Petal

In case you hadn’t noticed, Juliette had only one petal left to earn – Be a Sister to Every Girl Scout. My plan was to complete the first two steps ahead of time, and then Juliette would complete step three at the library with my sister and her coworker who are both lifetime Girl Scouts. It was too busy for step 3 or the fun patch, so we completed the badge at home.

  1. Celebrate your differences
  2. Learn about Girl Scouts from around the world
  3. Support your Girl Scout sisters

We basically followed the Daisy handbook for this petal. Juliette fancies herself a Swiftie, so I played the song “You Belong with Me” and we had a dance party. Each time I paused the music, we froze and compared how we were standing (completely different from each other). Although we talked about how it was ok and maybe even a good thing that we weren’t exactly alike, this led to trying to do the same dance moves together because our similarities are good too.

We completed step two in the car so we didn’t look at pictures of Girl Scouts around the world, but we did talk about the fact that Girl Scouts are from the United States and Girl Guides are from the rest of the world. You can have Americans living in other countries so you can have Girl Scouts AND Girl Guides in places like Japan. I also told her that she can go to camp in other countries in the future because she could attend Girl Scout camps or Girl Guide camps. She asked about how they do Girl Scouts on an island and I reminded her that there were computers and the internet when we visited Hawaii. There was also a Girl Scout shop there, but they were closed the day we visited Honolulu. And when we visited Mexico, we got there a few hours after their Girl Guides meeting – I had looked it up and wanted to take her to say hello if we’d gotten there in time.

I had planned to do the third step at the library, but we weren’t able to based on the time. Juliette did get to meet another lifetime Girl Scout though, so I’m counting it towards the petal. At home, I taught her the hot and cold game (one of the choices for step three in the handbook). We played several rounds, giggling the entire time as we took turns searching and guiding. Once we finished, we talked about if it was easier to find things ourselves or with help. Afterwards, I brought her over to Daddy, had her share the Girl Scout promise, then shook her hand and congratulated her on completing all of the petals! Coming soon will be the Welcome to the Daisy Flower Garden Journey since it’s all about learning the Girl Scout Promise and Law, and we just completed reviewing both in the petal set. Now it’s time to put it all together!

Good Neighbor

I was browsing The Badge Archive and discovered that they had shared slideshow PDFs from Girl Scouts of Western New York to earn the Good Neighbor badge. I wasn’t sure about the school requirement since Juliette homeschools, so this was a nice alternative and I knew we could add some things to it if needed to better meet the requirements.

  1. Explore your school
  2. Discover your city or town
  3. See what makes your state special

The first pdf explored the meaning of community and included a link to a YouTube video that shared many of the communities of which a young girl is or may be a member, from family and school all the way up to the continent. The PDF also included pictures of “important” locations in a town and gave Juliette a chance to solve riddles about them. She enjoyed it and asked to do it again so I made up silly rhymes about the other places (“go here before you want to drive, otherwise you won’t arrive” – the gas station). I loved hearing her giggle as she chose the wrong answers first (“I’m just joking”).

The second PDF talked about neighborhoods so Juliette looked out the window to find out what she could see of our neighborhood. Then we talked about what the neighbors would see looking at our house and she drew a picture of our neighborhood. I asked her about important places in our neighborhood/town and we talked about the police, hospital, fire station, library, post office, and town hall. Then I asked her for ideas of how to be a good neighbor and supplemented her ideas with the ones in the PDF. The PDF didn’t include anything to learn about our state, so I found a coloring page that also included the state flower, animal, plant, and more. Once Juliette colored the page and we spoke about the state “stuff,” I shook her hand and congratulated her on her newest badge!

An Update on Progress

Here’s my usual update on the badges, journeys, and awards that we’re working on or have planned.

  • Between Earth and Sky Journey – earned the Bucket and the Firefly and finished reading the story. We have the Take Action Project planned to do in April.
  • Money Explorer Badge – we haven’t started yet, but it seems to go well with cookie season
  • How Robots Move Badge/ Design a Robot Badge – would make sense to follow up the first robotic badge with these
  • Welcome to the Daisy Flower Garden Journey – we haven’t started, but we have the books and this would be a great third journey that would also earn her Daisy Journey Summit Award Pin
  • Automotive badges – she’s signed up for a virtual event with NASCAR this week to earn all three badges
  • Daisy Craft and Tinker Badge – we plan to work on this badge at an upcoming Home Depot or Lowe’s kids workshop
  • STEM Sisters Chemistry – it’s a fun patch, not a badge, but chemistry is the focus this quarter, so we’ll be doing that too
