After her last petal, Juliette wanted to keep working on earning badges, but we had already signed her up for a program put on by Ambassador Girl Scout Troop 11302 in California to raise money for travel. She attended their virtual Global Action Award program.
Global Action Award
Although this program was open to Girl Scouts of all levels, here are the steps for Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors to earn the Global Action Award (according to the GS site and VTK, the award was focused on Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, but it also stated it was for 2023):
- Explore the Global Goals and Global Action Award.
- Explore what it means to be a global citizen.
- Create a global citizen challenge.
- Explore what responsible consumption means.
- Create a responsible consumption challenge.
I included the link above to register for the replay of the event and earn the award, but basically the program lasted two hours and included activities to earn the award as well as activities to try to help keep the girls’ attention and celebrate being Girl Scouts. The girls shared about Global Goals set by world leaders in 2015 with a goal to achieve by 2030, along with the 17 specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They shared about being a global citizen. For this year’s session, the girls shared about Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, explored what it meant, and gave the girls opportunities to create campaigns and take action to share the importance of it. The program included several games and time for snacks and having tea together to honor Juliette Gordon Low.
Note: Troop 11302 did a webinar for the Global Action Award in previous years and provided links for anyone that wants to go back to earn those awards also. 2024 Goal 1: No Poverty. 2023 Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
Responsible for What I Say and Do
Although she has several badges and journeys in progress, Juliette chose to continue with petals, so we continued to Responsible for What I Say and Do. Here are the steps:
- Be responsible for what you say
- Be responsible for what you do
- Be responsible in the community
We started with the crumpled heart experiment from the Daisy Girl Scout Handbook. I asked Juliette to draw or paint a picture of a heart. I told her we would do something with it, but I didn’t tell her what. She tried to make her heart perfect and color in the lines she’d drawn. I told her to crumble it and she chose to cut it out first and then crumble it. When she opened it and discovered that she couldn’t smooth the heart back out, Juliette began to cry. This experiment really made an impact on her. For step number two, I asked her about the various responsibilities listed in her handbook so she could realize how responsible (or irresponsible) she is. We then made a list of her responsibilities because we haven’t done that before. The Badge Archive gave us the idea of making friendship bracelets (one to keep and one to give to someone as a pledge to be a responsible friend)
