Fun Patches, Badges, and a Pin

I finally posted, but Juliette has earned nine more things in the meantime…

Stuff I Forgot to Mention….

I completely forgot that Juliette earned several fun patches at the end of last year. She earned one for attending a STEM Sisters quarterly meeting. Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida has a Women in STEM virtual series. It’s pretty cool because there’s a fun patch for the first attended meeting and then girls can earn rocker bars for every additional meeting they attend… even if they register retroactively! Juliette attended a program by a Cosmetic Scientist/Product Developer to earn the fun patch. Next up, she attended a virtual holiday baking event and made Gingerbread Bark. It was supposed to be made with white chocolate chips, but Juliette doesn’t like them so we made 2 batches, one with white chocolate and the other with milk chocolate. Once she tried them, she liked the white chocolate ones after all. This earned her a gingerbread fun patch.

Toy Business Designer

  1. Come up with an idea for a toy
  2. Make your idea even better
  3. Pitch your idea

Recently, Juliette has been making 2-dimensional cardboard dolls so she wanted to learn about making a toy business. She actually finished two steps before even starting the badge, but we went over the steps to ensure she understood how they were related and that they were part of the badge. The cardboard dolls are the idea. To make them even better, she showed them to daddy, Cub, and me. We gave her feedback (Cub didn’t like the color lol and I shared that they would be destroyed if they got wet) so she improved them by adding a protective layer of tape. She wants to add a waterproof see-through layer on top of every doll she makes. Once I explained the difference between pitch and sell, including a foray into the world of kickstarter, Juliette was willing to make a poster to pitch her dolls. I took a photo and used the background remover in Canva, then let her dictate what to type. Then she added in graphics – a cute little  girl to represent her and a dinosaur to represent Cub. I had to remind her that she was not selling her dolls yet, this was just an activity to see how it works.

COOKIES!

This section is going to be a lot…. Juliette earned the 2026 Cookie Rally fun patch by attending one of our council’s rallies with Cub, Grandma, Grandpa, and me. The CEO was there meeting the girls and gave Juliette a custom “I met the CEO” fun patch where she got to place a smaller map, dog, book, and briefcase patch onto it.

Cookie Entrepreneur Family Pin Year 2

  1. Set a goal
  2. Decide how to reach your goal
  3. Practice with money
  4. Learn to talk to customers
  5. Think like a Girl Scout

While setting up her Digital Cookie site, Juliette worked through the worksheet used to earn this pin. She sold 260 packages last year. When she looked at the prizes, she set a goal for 400 packages this year. How to reach the goal consisted of listing people she wanted to ask to buy cookies. A few days earlier, we had been working with money for a math lesson and I asked her several questions about the price of a variety of numbers of boxes of cookies. She practiced selling me cookies and I first said no, then yes to the sale. She wasn’t happy with me saying no, but I tried to help her understand that she won’t always make the sale. To think like a Girl Scout, we looked up the important cookie dates and she wrote them down.

Cookie Goal Setter

  1. Decide how you will use your money
  2. Set a package goal
  3. Share your goals with your customers

Step one of this badge was completed while setting up the Digital Cookie site. Juliette had to share what she wanted to do with the money earned during cookie season. As a Juliette, she doesn’t have as many options, so she chose to buy Girl Scout outfits and stuff at the Girl Scout shop. She already set her goal in the above pin. Juliette practiced sharing her goal with customers when she practiced selling cookies.

My Money Choices

  1. Find out what you need and want
  2. Set a goal and save for what you need and want
  3. Explore how to make choices with money

I asked Juliette to name things that cost money that she needs and prompted her with additional ideas when she mostly answered with rooms in a home. She then listed things that she wants but doesn’t need. I also asked her a few trick questions – since her tablet is a want, was my laptop a want or a need. She correctly answered that it’s a need for me to do my work. I also asked her about my phone. She said it was a need for me to speak to clients, but I shared that it’s also a need for safety, but additionally, it’s a want since I don’t need to have the specific phone model I have. For step two, Juliette chose several items she wanted at different price points. She calculated how many weeks it would take her to earn enough money to purchase them if she earned $5 per week. For step three, I told her to imagine she had $500 and asked how she would spend it. First she gave ideas to help the family or have fun with her brother, Cub. Then I asked her about what she’d do with the money if she had to give it to a charity or good cause, and she said she’d donate it to the poor people in the world to help them get houses.

An Update on Progress

With 19 badges, journeys, and awards left… and many fun patches as well, here’s the plan:

  • After completing the NASCAR program, Juliette just has the Board Game Design Challenge to finish up the mechanical engineering set.
  • We are working on the God is Love Medal, which is part of the faith programming for various scouting organizations and created by the National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire. I shared it with our Religious Education coordinator and she said that she’d be able to sign off when Juliette completes the program.
  • STEM Sisters is providing Think Like an Engineer badges for any STEM Sister that completes that badge/ journey, so that’s definitely on our to do list along with the 5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals! Journey, Think Like a Programmer Journey, and the Daisy Outdoor Journey (likely when it’s warmer, but we’ll see).
  • Juliette also signed up for a Global Action Award virtual meeting, but missed it. We were sent the recording (which is available here) which she’ll be watching sometime soon.
